Avoid Lighting Installation Disasters: 5 Must-Know Tips

At Hiooz, we’ve found that many customers aren’t afraid of choosing a light—they’re worried about installing it.

No worries—if you avoid these 5 common mistakes, you can easily install beautiful, safe, and long-lasting lighting by yourself.

Voltage & Wiring Standards Vary by Country

Many people buy lights from other countries without realizing that voltage and wiring standards differ—and end up with lights that don’t work, or worse, get damaged.

Tips for avoiding pitfalls:

  • U.S. standard is 110V/60Hz, while many countries such as the UK, Germany, and Australia use 220V/50Hz.
  • Wiring colors differ too: the U.S. typically uses black (hot), white (neutral), and green or bare copper (ground), while many 220V countries—like the UK or Australia—often use brown, blue, and green-yellow wires.
  • Not sure? Always check with a professional electrician.

All Hiooz lights support 110–240V and include English installation guides with easy-to-follow wiring diagrams.

Not All Ceilings Are Equal—Check Weight Support

Heavy chandeliers on drywall ceilings? A recipe for disaster if not reinforced properly.

Tips for avoiding pitfalls:

  • For lights over 5kg (11 lbs), use anchors or ceiling hooks.
  • Drywall or aluminum ceilings need extra support.
  • Unsure of your ceiling type? Remove a panel to inspect inside.( We will clearly state the structure of the lamp in the installation instructions.)

Turn Off the Power Before Installation—Always

Some people only flip the wall switch—not the breaker. This can cause electric shocks or tripped circuits. Not worth the risk.

Tips for avoiding pitfalls:

  • Always turn off power at the breaker box—not just the wall switch
  • Use a voltage tester to double-check wires are not live.

Our instructions clearly emphasize power safety, with illustrated steps for beginners.

Choose the Right Size for Your Space—Bigger Isn't Always Better

Bought a beautiful light only to find it blocks a cabinet door—or doesn’t light the room enough? Common mistake.

Tips for avoiding pitfalls:

  • Dining pendants should hang 30–36 inches above the table.
  • Bedroom lights should take up less than 1/4 of room height.
  • Avoid oversized fixtures in small rooms.

Plan Wiring & Light Position in Advance

Many customers shop for lights after renovation, only to find there’s no wiring where they want the light.

Tips for avoiding pitfalls:

  • Wall lamps and motion lights need pre-wired locations.
  • Plug-in lights work great for finished rooms.

We offer plug-in wall lights and wireless options with diagrams on wiring and switch placement—even for renters.
